The new cell phones are here! Here's an East Bay for Kerry-Edwards volunteer training Nevada phonebankers. Come on in.

Tina Valkanoff has been leading all sorts of activities at East Bay Kerry long before the primaries. For most of October she's been banging heads at the DNC to get mobile phones for the UDCs. Tons of resistance to a simple idea: companies like MetroPCS offer unlimited minutes to anywhere in the US. Rent them for the rest of the campaign and you have no physical installation costs for swing state phone banking, and they're available to coordinate volunteers doing fieldwork on election day. She finally broke through and got boxes of phones. This is a shot of her catching her breath on a box at the Oakland office.

Last minute stuff

I'm doing various things in Reno. All indications suggest we will see a surge in first time voting tomorrow, both here and in the East Bay. Help your neighbors:

Boxer at OakDem HQ Sunday at 11:30

Hello All, Senator BoxerSenator Boxer and Chairman Art Torres will be at the Oakland EVC office, 2135 Broadway, on Sunday, October 31, 11:30 AM-12:30 . You are invited and can bring friends. It will be fun. If you plan on attending, email Brendan McCarthy - brendanm@boxer2004.org. He works for the Boxer campaign and invited myself and all other East Bay Democratic Volunteers.

Here is what Brendan wrote:

"This will be Senator Boxer’s last appearance in the East Bay before Election Day, and it would be great to get a great turnout at this event to show her how much the East Bay appreciates her and is excited about sending her back to the Senate for another term."

"So, here are the details. The event is this Sunday, October 31st, from 11:30am – 12:30pm. I would love to see you all out there and the Senator would too. There is no cost to the event and I am not asking anything of any of you. Just show up (bring friends too) and bring your energy and enthusiasm."

Bigger than life. C-SPAN kept the question on the screen. Made it really clear when candidates changed the subject or otherwise avoided answering the question. Kerry always answered a question before adding another point. But Bush seemed to switch when he wasn't prepared for the question.

From the audience when Bush was talking about the importance of prayer in his life: "We've been praying for the last four years!"

About his Army of Compassion exit strategy from Iraq: "Fighting with the Bayonettes of Love!"

Definitely a Kerry crowd.

OK, what kind of citizens take off at 5pm on a Wednesday night to watch the fourth debate? And give up two baseball playoffs? And wait in line in 80 degree weather for an hour?

Patriots.

Democrats.

Oaklanders.

"I have two phones free; come in and phonebank." This is a shot of the California Democratic Party office in the UDC. The marked-up map of Oakland on the back wall was blurred to protect our door-to-door Get Out The Vote strategy.

From the street, our office is the one with all the campaign posters. It used to be a piano store but this is a great use for the space.
